After rising slightly on the London Exchange, oil futures retreated on news from the US Gulf that Hurricane Gustav was downgraded to a Category 2 storm. Initial concerns that Gustav would wreak havoc and destruction to oil and gas producing platforms has subsided.

Andrew Moylan had a great opinion piece in today’s Wall Street Journal.
Mr. Moylan references the Congressional Research Service estimates the potential federal take from ANWR oil development at $191 billion dollars over the next 30 years. Yes, an incredible $18.36 for every barrel goes to the government.

To save energy last week, Speaker Pelosi shut out the House lights (and cameras) on her GOP counterparts, who decided that they were not done speaking. This may have been the green thing to do, but the last time I checked, Rep. John Boehner and his posse were still speaking.

Was it President Bush lifting the executive order prohibiting offshore drilling? Was it the high price of gas that forced many Americans to take ’staycations’ and drive up the gasoline inventories? Was it the GOP revolt to take over the House floor to debate oil drilling while Speaker Pelosi is on the book signing circuit?

President Bush withdrew the offshore drilling ban. The crude market reacted by dropping nearly 20% before any appreciable uptick.
Does that mean that even one more drill site is struck and pumping? Absolutely not, but as I have stated in this blog before, perception is reality.
Now, I have a suggestion…
