Television icon Art Linkletter died on Wednesday at 97 after years of spoiling thousands of dead pools.

His early TV popularity dates back to the the mid-1950′s with the show People Are Funny.

As a child in the 60′s, I first remember seeing Linkletter in House Party; he seemed old back then too, but was always funny and had this grandpa-type warmth about him.

Given the resurgence of Betty White’s popularity in the past year, culminating with her appearance of the Mother’s Day episode of Saturday Night Live, could Art be far behind? Alas, we’ll never get to know.

I guess the the torch is now passed to nonagenarian Ernest Borgnine – who claims his long life is due to keeping his hands to himself.

Rest in peace, Art!
