After 40 years, the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union, unable to keep all of its breakaway provinces and Soviet Bloc countries in check, disbanded. This collapse effectively was punctuated when Ronald Reagan announced at the Brandenburg gate “Mr. Gorbechev, tear down this wall!” two years earlier.

The cries of the American people are no different. While we have endured the pain at the pump, House and Senate Democrats have postured on how to incrementally allow offshore drilling. Heck, I’m not calling for a drilling bonanza; it should be done in a fair and responsible manner. But to see the insistence by the Democrats that we can plead with the rest of the world to provide us with petroleum without tapping our own supplies is quiet embarrassing.

Seeing that they were at the end of their rope, the Dems ceded their objections once they realized they had to go home to campaign for their own re-election. Standing in the way of offshore drilling while voter were paying $3.50 to over $4 per gallon for gas was not going to be received well by the constituents they were about to face. The ‘slam dunk’ that the Democrats would increase their numbers in both the House and Senate, plus take the White House – all in the name of ‘Change’ – is looking a tad dubious these days.

Back on July 14th, President unilaterally rescinded the Executive Order banning offshore drilling. Now, two months later, the Congress-imposed 25 year-old drilling ban is set to die a slow, quiet death – to the cheers of many voters.
