I have NEVER smoked (anything) – ever. I have visions of my parochial school nurse chain-smoking in the church hall on bingo night and I was scarred for life.

However, I do have a problem with the feds taxing tobacco to holy hell to fund ‘healthcare’. Pardonnez moi – it’s all BULLS**T!!

How disingenuous! ‘We are only looking out for your health, so we’ll tax Big Bad Tobacco and provide money to states for health care.’ OK Senator (or Rep. or whomever), what happens when we dissuade so many people from smoking and there is a gap in healthcare funding? You know the answer all too well.

This formula does not work – tax one thing to fund another.

Now, the latest bonehead suggestion. Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is proposing that the state put cameras on Illinois interstate highways to catch speeders and bring in additional revenue. The governor then said the revenue could be used to combat “out-of-control crime.”

May I pose a question? What happens when motorists who use I-80 or I-39 wise up and travel the speed limit? Fine revenue will drop. Will that lead to increased violent crime because of the reduction of motorist infractions?

Governor, do you remember what happened recently in Dallas? It was an unintended consequence of a good intention.

Put down the cameras and end more entitlement programs. You’ll find the money.
